Never Break The Chain

Few record albums are more deserving of the attention that music journalist Cath Carroll gives Fleetwood Mac`s 1977 classic RUMOURS in her thoroughgoing overview, NEVER BREAK THE CHAIN. In over 200 pages of minute detail and exhaustive analysis, Carroll explores the band`s blues-based origins in mid-`60s England, its later personnel problems, and its search for and eventual discovery of the ideal replacement musicians in Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. She atmospherically portrays the mid-`70s air of hippie chic of the California studios in which the album was recorded, and includes an extensive overview of the people and techniques involved in its production. Created in an emotionally charged atmosphere (the two couples that made up the majority of the band were both splitting up) and involving fraught marathon recording sessions, with days devoted to recording a single guitar part, RUMOURS nevertheless became one of the biggest-selling albums of all time. CHAIN also includes Carroll`s illuminating analysis of RUMOURS` songs--many of which were direct commentaries on the band members` fragile emotional states--as well as her examination of the aftermath of the album`s release, which instantly catapulted Fleetwood Mac from underground favorites to full-fledged rock stardom.
